Weed Control & My Garden Vision

garden vision - back to eden gardening

Gardening when you’re going to be traveling can be a real pain … weeding and watering can both be a problem. Here’s how we solved our weed control challenge. Thankfully, Mother Nature provided the rain.

My goal this year has been to find a way to produce a great garden and keep it weeded. I had only a small 3 day window to put in the garden between our trip to AZ and the next one to Wisconsin. I was really bummed because I realized that without tending for 2.5 weeks the weeds would take over the garden.

Weeds are a huge problem here in Northwest, Georgia. Even though I’ve discovered the medicinal and edible qualities of many natural plants, these plants don’t always grow in spots you want them to grow. They (along with invasive plants) quickly take over and crowd out the vegetables you’re trying to grow.

I kept picturing all my work being for naught as the weeds would be knee high by the time we got home. Then I remembered what I’ve learned about the power of intention, envisioning and goal setting. The last thing you want to do is envision what you do NOT want. You have to envision what you DO want.

I decided to set aside my worst case scenarios and get a clear vision of what I wanted instead… lush vegetables with no weeds. What popped into my mind was a vision of wood chips between rows of lush, beautiful vegetables. With the vision came a certainty of knowing that it would happen just as I envisioned. I just needed to do the work.

Fortunately, a county worker appeared at our door unannounced the morning we were going to leave for AZ (about 2.5 weeks before I had the vision of the beautiful garden). He delivered a mound of wood chips Dave had asked about weeks earlier. We hadn’t heard back from the county worker since, but that morning he appeared at our door with a truckload of woodchips. I love how things are set into motion before we even set a clear intention! It’s almost like our envisioning travels back in time and makes things happen!

With the vision clearly in my head, Dave and I busted our rears for three days putting in the garden and hauling wood chips from the far end of the front yard to the side of the house. We put down cardboard and covered it with the wood chips and planted all the vegetables in the rows. Then, we left for our 2.5 week trip to Wisconsin and Michigan. Every time I’d think of my garden while we were away, I’d picture it beautiful with big vegetables, no weeds and the wood chips doing their job. I trusted that my envisioning would send the rain we needed to make the vision a reality.

The video below is the result. It’s my vision come to fruition! I just love the power of intension!

This video shows the wildflowers for pollinators in the yard and the garden of squash, zucchini, peppers, cushaw, cucumbers, bush beans, pole beans, tomatoes, basil, etc. The photos I took in the garden and yard are set to some piano music I composed this morning.
