My brother (Gene Kuhns, Jr.) and I (David Kuhns) connect to nature. We have since we were young. Our Dad and Grandma Bertha, as well as aunts, uncles and family members, taught us how.
He's planting and organizing 10 acres on Vashon Island (near Seattle). I recently moved to 5+ acres of cedar and hickory woods along West Chickamauga Creek in Northwest Georgia. We're both working toward natural and self-sustaining lifestyles. Wildflower cultivation; bee, butterfly and bird attracting; organic gardening: In short, getting off the grid and back to the woods, fields and waters as much as possible. He's an energetic, engineering type. I'm the contemplative, creative type. (He gets stuff done. I think and write about it!) We capture -- with photos and writing -- what we observe and learn. Follow the Nature Guy(s) and our opposite coast adventures!

The Great Reinvention and Refocus
Inc. Magazine and others are calling it the Great Resignation … where corporate employees are leaving their jobs en masse as a result of what happened during 2020. David Kuhns says it isn’t the Great Resignation … it’s the Great Reinvention and Great Refocus. People have awakened to the reality that they aren’t happy in […]

Pulling Out Invasive Privet After A Rain
Invasive privet (aka Chinese privet) is a non-native species throughout the Southeast USA. Privet crowds out native wildflowers, bushes and trees, and is difficult to remove. For example, when I moved to my property in Catoosa County, Northwest Georgia, nearly the entire edge of my woods was a solid mass of privet. Since removing it, […]
Making Healthy Elderflower Tea
Elderflower tea may boost your immune system in the same way that elderberry juice does. This healthy tea, served hot or cold, is a refreshing drink that’s available in the early summer, well before elderberries are ripe. And tea from elderflowers is simple to make, with only a few things to watch out for. Check […]

Weed Control & My Garden Vision
Gardening when you’re going to be traveling can be a real pain … weeding and watering can both be a problem. Here’s how we solved our weed control challenge. Thankfully, Mother Nature provided the rain. My goal this year has been to find a way to produce a great garden and keep it weeded. I […]
Getting to the Root Issue
Getting to the root of thistles is a lot like getting to the root of your self-defeating behaviors and negative self-talk. While clearing my garden spot this morning, I had to remove two very large thistles. Thistles are spiky things and they can go through your gloves. The best way I’ve found to remove them […]
Find Peace, Mindfulness and Balance in the Garden
I don’t know about you, but the conditions of society and the world can stress me out. Since I run an online business, social media is part of my every day life and it can suck me down a rabbit hole and become a huge time-waster. I stumbled on a free method for getting my […]
Chickweed: A Lesson in Looking for the Good
I’m in a Georgia native plant group. People in there can be so interesting about how they want to get rid of any plant that isn’t native to the area. You hear a lot of vegetation called “non-native invasive.” Some things really are problematic. But many are not that big of a deal and they […]
