At Spirit Tree Farms, we’re learning a lot about wildflower seed harvesting as we go along. Why do we do wildflower seed harvesting? Simple: To grow more wildflowers, to aid Mother Nature, and to attract more butterflies and other pollinators.
Wildflower Seed Harvesting Lessons
This year (Dec., 2021), as I was harvesting goldenrod and crownbeard (aka frost flowers or ice flowers) seedheads, as well as coralberries, on our property in Catoosa County, Georgia, here are some lessons learned (which we’re happy to share in this video) :
- Use non-fabric bags
- Use several bags (separating the different seedheads immediately)
- With crownbeard, shake and smash the bag vigorously, THEN collect the seeds (and a few seedhead parts and stems) from the bottom of the bag.
