Using Carpet as Mulch and Weedkiller: Video How To

Pink carpet as a weed killer -- pulled it back and planted Swiss Chard and Basil in weed-free garden dirt! Nature's Guys, April 2018Rather than throwing old pink shag into the landfill, I decided to use carpet as a weedkiller and a mulch. As my dad said: Deprive weeds of light, and they will die. Four months ago, when I ripped out some old pink carpet from my house, I put it over a large rectangle of my back yard that was covered with weeds and invasive grasses. Now that I’m getting ready to plant my garden, here’s the result! Nice, clean, weed-free dirt ready to be planted!
(Note: Cardboard and newspaper also work well AND are bio-degradable, but need to be weighed down.)

David Kuhns

Dave Kuhns is originally a quasi-city boy from suburban Milwaukee, but he spent weekends and summers in nature on Lake Winneconne in central Wisconsin. After raising his kids in a Seattle suburb, he moved to a small town in central Utah. He figured he’d buy some rural property there, or back in the Badger State.

Then he fell in love. Through a series of amazing events, he bought a rural property (a few acres) across the creek from the Chickamauga National Military Park (Civil War battlefield). There, he and his new wife are putting into reality the conservation, gardening and land management practices he learned from his grandmother, his forest ranger Dad, his little brother, and his own surburban experience.
